In 1815, a large quantity of tobacco, left to dry in the summer sun at the Florence Manufactory, was caught in a violent downpour. Unable to "throw all that tobacco into the Arno," it was decided to produce cigars to sell to the people of Florence. It was an immediate success: the water, in fact, fermented the tobacco, giving it a completely new taste.
